If you go online without a VPN, all your Internet activity is linked to your IP address and accessible by your Internet service provider, advertisers and marketers, other people on your network, and government entities. When using a virtual private network, the VPN intercepts your data and encrypts it before it reaches the Internet. When you connect to the Internet via your home network, your device connects via your router and modem and then through your Internet service provider (ISP). Any incoming data follows the same route and passes through an encrypted connection before arriving at your Internet-connected device.
